This is information central for our CYT families. We want to help you support your student at CYT and stay informed throughout the process. Here you will find all the information and forms that facilitate the production of a show at CYT.

New to CYT?

If you are new to CYT, or this is your first show with us, you'll want to check out how we do things!

 1. Classes: Students must attend a CYT class in order to participate in a CYT Show
 2. Auditions: Sign ups are required to Audition for our Shows, we only require a 1-1/2 minute song to audition. See more below in the Audition section.
 3. Callbacks: We don't always need to see everyone for a callback, please don't be discouraged if you don't get one, we may have seen all we need to.
 4. Show Vision Sunday: 1st Parent/Student Production Meeting for the Show
 5. Tech Crew: Is organized by a Parent Committee leader, and priority to the team goes 1st to current Tech Students, 2nd to current students who are attending other CYT classes, 3rd to Previous session students, 4th to siblings of cast and crew.
 6. Rehearsals: 2 nights a week for the duration of the rehearsal calendar, plus tech week.
 7. Production Teams: Parents make up our Production Teams, the Show Coordinators will assign the committee leads and coordinate the communication between teams, staff, and production staff.
 8. 2nd Parent Meeting: Will be scheduled by the Show Coordinator
 9. Downtown Promo Tours: We will do a promotional walk downtown(s), 2 times before Tech.
10. Super Saturday: This is our Load-in, Spacial rehearsal, Tech Q2Q, House Team Training, Concession Walk through ( or any combination of these as is necessary for each production)
11. Performances: We perform 4-6 shows per weekend. Shows may run for 2 weekends.
12. Strike: Is a necessary part of every show, we put it up...we take it down.
13. Cast Party: A parent volunteer will arrange a Cast Party either immediately or shortly after the closing of a show.
14. CYT Vocabulary: CYT is a little different, we think it's different in a great way! One way that is a little different, is CYT vocab. "Affiliate", "Area Coordinator", "Super Saturday"...etc. Follow the link to check it out.

Audition Process

Auditions are a wonderful way for students to gain self-confidence and experience in performing in front of people. Currently enrolled CYT students ages 8-18 are invited to audition for any one of the CYT productions each session.

1. SIGN UP: You may sign up for a show audition if you are registered for a same session class
2. PREPARE: You will need to prepare at least one song to sing in the style that you feel shows your best voice, it needs to be about 32 bars, which is about a 1-1 1/2min. You do not need to prepare a monologue for every audition, but we will always love to hear one. Check with the requirements of each show.
3. AUDITION DAY: Be early, "early is on time, on time is late." Be ready with your completed Audition Form, including headshot, to sign in

A CYT Audition
Auditions for CYT Shows will take place in 2 parts and are open for all to watch.
1st Part: We will take 5 auditioners at a time. Auditioners will be asked to sing their prepared song, and perform their monologues (if prepared). Directors may ask a few questions and may ask you to sing a different style song.
2nd Part: You will learn choreography the first 30 minutes. Then, your group of 5 will perform the choreography for the Artistic Team.
Callbacks will be held on a second day, and they are closed.
Callbacks will be only for those we need to see again. A callback often means that we feel that we need more information involving the students to determine our best casting choice.
If you do not receive a callback it does not mean you are not cast, it simply means we don't need more information.

Audition Tips
  • Find songs and monologues that showase your best talents
  • Introduce yourself with energy and confidence.
  • Smile, project, make eye contact with the directors.
  • Sing an appropriate song in your range – a children’s song or show tune is recommended.
  • Bring sheet music or an instrumental-only song on an easy to use device.
  • Use your whole body for your whole audition.
  • Perform a monologue or dance routine or other special skill if you aren’t a singer.
  • Dress comfortably, don't wear any kind of costume, be prepared to dance
If you are cast...
  • You must be at all rehearsals for which you are scheduled. If an absence is necessary, permission must be received from the Show Coordinator. Any cast member missing more than two rehearsals not indicated on the Conflict Calendar may not be able to participate in the show. Conflicts (other than illness) after casting are not allowed.
  • All conflicts must be listed at the time of auditions, and will be taken under consideration during casting. Conflicts, other than illness, reported after casting will require that you drop the show.
  • You may not leave rehearsal early.
  • You must commit to approximately 40 hours of rehearsal time before move-in and dress rehearsal week.
  • You must attend Show Vistion Sunday (scroll down for info), and Super Saturday and all dress/tech rehearsals.
  • You must be at all performances. This may include missing one day of school.
  • You must pay a Production Fee by the 1st Full weekend of rehearsals, and if you must make arrangements, please contact the Managing Director.
  • Parents must agree to attend two parent meetings, (the 1st being Show Vision Sunday) and to serve 20 hours on a Parent Production Team during the 10 week session, in addition to serving during 2 of the 5 shows. An "Adult Sponsor" may volunteer these hours in the place of a parent and designate the hours to a cast member.
  • Please Contact our Show Coordinator or Managing Director if there are any issues with the volunteer/production requirements.
Parents must agree to the following:
I realize that if my child is chosen for the cast, I will be responsible to make sure he/she attends every performance and every rehearsal for which he/she is scheduled. In case of illness, I will notify the Show Coordinator in advance, or as soon as possible. In order to ensure the quality of rehearsals and the production, I understand that two or more absences may result in dismissal from the show. I understand that students who audition are NOT eligible for a class tuition refund. I understand that if my student is dismissed from the show for behavior or absences, I am not entitled to a refund of any kind.
I understand that I am also responsible for personal items (i.e., shoes, tights, make-up). I understand that I will be required to attend two parent meetings and to volunteer 20+ hours and work at 2 shows as part of a Parent Production Team.

Parent Involvment

Our Parents are essential to creating the best CYT.

If your student is cast in a show, there are two mandatory Parent Meetings. The first takes place on Sunday after the initial Audition dates, and the 2nd will be scheduled individually for each show calendar. Each cast member must have at least one parent (or representative 18 years or older) attend these meetings.

Likewise, at least one parent (or adult family representative) is required to be involved in preparing for the production. CYT has found that “Parent Production Teams” are the best way to get the essential jobs done! Our parents love the community and partnership with CYT that comes with each show experience. Parents actively serve on one of the many Parent Production Teams throughout preparation for the show and/or during the show.
Current Parent Expectations are 20 pre-production hours and assistance during 2 showtimes.
