Casting Note: The original production of GODSPELL was performed by a cast of five men and five women. Most productions are presented with a different gender balance and number of actors. Except for Jesus, John the Baptist and Judas, the character names used in our program will be the names of our CYT actors who are playing the roles, rather than the first names of the original cast members in the script. For purposes of casting, we will use the assigned names (most from the original Broadway cast). Directors will look for obvious personality characteristics to allow the individual cast members to be different enough from one another for the audience to distinguish them, and allow for assignment of lines in the script to make sense from a personality and character arc point-of-view. Unless noted, disciples can be male or female.

All of the Disciples must possess a high energy, sometimes over-the-top or quirky story telling ability. Physical comedy, vocal expression and comedic skits are all used by the disciples to act out lessons from the Bible. Though there are funny and silly moments, there are also dramatic moments that require each actor to express their deep love for Jesus/God (typically in song) and their grief when he dies. Must be mature enough to follow direction and contain his/her energy as we transition from “silly” stage work to “serious” stage work.

In addition to each individual being able to stand out, it is important that all be able to function as an ensemble, without feeling like anyone (other than Jesus) stands out above the others. The directing team will be looking for comic ability, improvisation skills, and vocal strength.
